Maybe I'm not getting the finnish humor. Which is not entirely implausible. But come on.
I get dark humor, I'm not an idiot. I know some people need to see the funny in the sadness of life but fucking come on. And again, maybe I've been too influenced by the 'PC culture' and seen one too many American comedies that have ruined my sense of humor but I didn't find this book amusing.
I found it infuriating. Are you making a group to help people or to assist them with suicide? Why do all the deaths that do happen feel accidental? Did the author not feel, that making the living suicidal characters show up at the funeral of a 'successful' suicide victim a bit of a slap in the face of the victim's close ones?
*here is where I complain about using the theme of suicide as a joke so if you're not into that just skip*
Where is the joke in making fun of something people actually go through and don't do just because they got bored of living? The juxtaposition between the characters that just had a bad episode in their lives and the woman whose kids apparently didn't care about her and the husband who degraded and physically abused her was fucking wild.
I get that this book came out in 1990 but fuck me, domestic abuse wasn't funny 30 years ago and it isn't funny now.
The sad part about this is that my highschool professor recommended this book in class and I highly respected his opinion. Now I'm super confused as to what he found entertaining about this.
A group of people determined to commit mass suicide fuck around Europe searching for the perfect spot to do it, until they realise that none of them have any problems that a good break from their hum-drum lives can't fix. But some members still die and whoopsie! Send some flowers, attend the funeral and onward we go!
I won't go into how damaging it is to depict characters as suicidal but make their problems seem trivial, so as to then go "and all they needed was some time away from their boring lives, isn't that funny". Right.
