I really loved the synopsis and concept for this book, and thought the author had some really creative and interesting ideas that with more editing could totally transform this book into a genre-defying mindfuck. Once the plot started moving, it was really engaging and thrilling but it took a while to get to that point. Overall, not a bad book, but didn’t hit as hard as I wish it could’ve.

The thesis is about how Black people respond to racism in white spaces... which is a conversation I'm not a part of, so that might be why I wasn't moved by the story. The "thriller" tag made me expect something much more exciting. The book like dips its toe into science fiction but doesn't really commit and the vast OBG conspiracy was not compelling enough for suspension of disbelief.

This novel was more social horror than thriller. Normally I enjoy social horror, but this didn’t quite work for me. The pacing was too slow, the characters felt flat, and the premise wasn’t fleshed out nor did it make much sense.

This was good! I did not see this coming. Happy to have come across this author. I can’t wait to read another one from her. It had a tiny hint of psychological thriller to it. No sexual content. Mild profanity. Characters were deceptive in a “No way is this happening!” kind of way.

The twist comes much too late in the narrative, feeling unwelcome after the much more complicated first three quarters, but the book is overall an interesting and frightening look at what it takes to excel in white dominated occupations.
