The first George Smiley book, this was a delightful introduction to the world of the books. Simon Vance's reading is wonderful. Also, there are some surprisingly funny lines. Very much enjoyed this and will likely listen to more.

This book had a perspective I had not been exposed to before: an English intelligence officer who recruited German people to be spies for the UK during WWII and post-war time. It was really interesting to read about how Jews in England viewed the split of Germany. Despite the Holocaust recently occurring, anti-semitism seemed like it was still common. No one actually says the word Holocaust and they talk very indirectly about it. In the book, some Jews saw East Germany and the Soviet Union (who helped defeat the Nazis), and thus communism, as less anti-Semitic than the West. I liked the writing style. Elsa Fennan was a great character.

This is the third book by Le Carré that I have read (and the third smiley book). This reads more like a detective story than his other books I’ve read, but I enjoyed it all the same. It kept my interest very well and I enjoyed reading the introduction to George smiley as well as some of his backstory.
