After the first couple of chapters, I really enjoyed this book. It’s an epic fantasy full of adventure and ordeals. The trio meet all sorts of unusual creatures and people, both good and evil and those who are neither. They face a task few believe they can accomplish, but still they stand by each other. My daughter, 9, enjoyed the story a lot, too. She gripped my wrist at some of the exciting parts and always wanted “more” when we were done reading for the evening. This is the first in a series, and of course she thinks we should go out and get the next immediately. I love books like this, that both she and I can enjoy.
According to Amazon, the age range for this book is grades 5-8. My daughter's in 4th, though, and I think it was totally appropriate for her.

Absolutely wonderful book. The writing was so expressive, and really painted the rich landscape and characters with its words. I started this book not knowing that it was part of a series and now I'm excited to read more.
Trying to read some middle school books I don't usually pick up. This one took a little for me to get in to then I couldn't stop reading it. It will be a good fantasy book to book talk to my students.
Really, really enjoyed this book. Reminded me why I read and write in the first place, and has made me curious about the rest of the series and T. A. Barron as an author. The twists and turns off the coming of age plot, the lush descriptions, the corny heroic themes -- I love it. I take off a star for characters, mainly. I enjoyed that the characters were unique, but I wanted to spend more time with each of them. Yes, the plot dictated pace, but still. Obstacles and a ticking clock work well. Second, I'm not a fan of characters getting credit for things they didn't do. I won't reveal what, but it's there, and it kind of made me feel like the protagonist was outshined by the band of misfits.
Still, a really fun read. Very minor flaws.

The book started out really slow and I contemplated about putting it down. I am glad that I didn't because I ended up really liking the imaginary vision I got from the second half of the book. This is a creative story and I cannot wait to get the other books in the series.
Wales, magic, Merlin, Arthur!
(Goes to all of the Merlin books)

Fairly simple plot line, but well written and fun to read.
I LOVED this book! This is a fabulous series! It's fast paced and keeps you turning the pages, hungry to figure everything out. I highly recommend it =D
