It’s worth it going into this book not knowing much. Parts made me cringe, others were a true surprise. I enjoyed this story via audiobook which may have sharpened how I experienced this thriller.

This book successfully cured my reading slump. I had a hard time putting it down.

The audio production of the audiobook really added to the storytelling- all of the interviews were done w distinct voices, theme music, etc- and the changing of the narrator w each different POV was compelling. I was gripped from the beginning and because of the nature of the back and forth POVs, it is written with all of the complications of having a story told from many different sources (and many with mental health crises). There was a slow build on shaky foundation and the last 4ish hours felt like running down a steep hill.

TL;DR: a great book club pick but not the best thriller

A podcaster and her subject’s lives become eerily entwined. Is the subject’s odd behavior a symptom of a hard life, or is something sinister at play?
I gave this suspense novel a 4/5. It kept me flipping pages, but my whole book club felt like it actually wasn’t much of a thriller. The questionable reliability of all the characters - it’s in the title! - made our discussion fun. We peeled back layers that some of us hadn’t even though about! I think I would have liked it better if I felt more of a connection to the main character.
