Any summary would be reductive and unjust. Well worth your time.

Loved it! Forever interested in the parts of history that get erased and the voices that are silenced. It's important to me to seek out those stories/histories and be a witness to the forgotten.

very insightful and easy to read. people always say "why didn't they fight back?" and my response has always been "why have you assumed they hadn't?"

my only issue is that I wish there was more, but I get that it's easier said than done. the pushback the author faced from trying to get the information she wanted was not surprising, but it's still so baffling how easily people refuse someone of their history and live in the 2020s (they're probably the ones filling up Instagram and Twitter comments with their vileness lol)

This book tells an incredible story. It provides a visual depiction of what the slave trade actually looked like. It describes the story of the authors journey to find the truth about her ancestors past. It is as dark and haunting as it is illuminating. Rebecca Hall is a hero for writing this book.

A beautifully told and vital story that deserves all the attention Hall gives it and more.

I was not a fan of the art style; while Martinez's stark black-and-white images really capture the emotions of Hall's story, I do not like the way he draws people. Which, in a story about people first and foremost, was a big drawback for me.
