It's an MC romances with step brother, second chances and secrets. It wasn't bad but I wasn't as invested in the couple or the plot as I had hoped. It was angst, but wasn't keeping it on my toes, making me want to try to listen faster somehow to find out how it all can be resolved. Will probebly listen/read more from Bella Jewel as I think I can really enjoy her works as she seem to be able to have both interesting characters and plot to keep it all going. But this one just didn't work for me as well as I had hoped.

Briella and Alarick

I really enjoyed how the author portrayed the MC; not too much misogyny there. I’m always in with the stepsibling trope, but for some reason it didn’t klick for me in this one.
Just not exciting enough for me to give more than three stars.

The audiobook was narrated okay. Sarah Summers isn’t my favorite narrator but it wasn’t the worst either.

I love this story. It’s a bit different than the normal bodyguard-type of MC romance.

Briella left her hometown after experiencing trauma and losing her mother. Now she’s back to find her sister that she hasn’t been able to contact in a few weeks. She’s forced to face her past, her old flame, her pride, and her possible future.

I love the mystery behind this story which is common with MCs but I also love that she’s not on the run or needing refuge. She’s pushing this plot to gain answers. There is a cliffhanger at the end so don’t read if you don’t like that sort of thing. I plan on listening to the other books. I just hope it’s from another perspective because I tend to get bored once the romantic chase ends.

This is a fantastic first in a series! I’d thought this book was a standalone, and while some things do wrap up, it’s the first in two novels featuring Alarick and Briella. The rest of the books in the series will feature different characters.
The entire book is written from Briella’s point of view, with both past and present timelines. Six years ago she left town, including abandoning her boyfriend/step-brother. But now her sister isn’t responding to her calls and texts and she’s worried about her. She comes back to town, putting off a surgery she needs until after she can find and help her sister.
I picked this book up because it was suggested in a facebook group under the prompt of the heroine being sick and keeping her illness from her loved ones. This book doesn’t disappoint with this trope! She has a brain tumor and is getting awful headaches, but she is driven to find her sister before she has to undergo surgery–because if she doesn’t make it through the surgery, then who will help her sister? I love this kind of familial love in my romance novel heroines, and this book delivers nicely on this front.
While I enjoyed the book, the relationship between Alarick and Briella felt a little rushed and stilted. This is partly because it’s told through present and past timelines, and the gaps just didn’t quite connect for me. This was made up for by a fabulous suspense plotline, which I honestly wasn’t expecting. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next!
