My all-time childhood favorite (alongside Stellaluna). I’m glad my mom saved it for me to have for my kids. It’s such a beautiful story with lovely art and, since it’s from the perspective of a cat who can feel things like friendship and anger and sadness but doesn’t necessarily understand them (because he’s just a cat), it’s able to portray complex emotions like loss and grief in a very approachable way. I just read it for the first time in years (this time to my daughter) and it holds up even more as an adult—although now to my older soul it’s 100% a tearjerker.

Someone posted this story as a twitter thread recently, so I read it then and there. The illustrations are cute and its treatment of death for a young audience is sensitive and well-done.

I don't know about this as a children's book, but it is definitely written by a cat-lover! Oh the cat-feels!
