Considering how highly rated this is and that I’ve loved RY’s other contemporary romances, I expected this book to be a slam dunk… But I was incredibly disappointed. It was so slow and I had the hardest time getting into it. The driving conflict of the book was super frustrating and took entirely too long to resolve; by the time the conflict finally came to a head, I was so over it that I secretly wished the characters would just break up and the book would end. I felt like the characters had very little personality and the relationship was a bit insta-lovey. The last 30 pages were better than the first 400 combined and although the result was that the book ended on a high note, I can’t ignore the fact that the first 90% of the book was meh.

That said, there were good things about this. Rebecca Yarros’s writing is always engaging and she manages to capture the messy realness of life. Even though I didn’t love it, I can recognize that the story was beautiful and I think there’s a lot that one can learn from this about grief, forgiveness, and nontraditional love.
