Let me start by saying that this has an extremely interesting and unique narrative and was well-written. I enjoyed the first third or so of the book and by the end of the novel my interest had been regenerated. However, there were stretches of the book that, well, for me at least, stretched. I don't think it helped that my sympathies often lay with the anti hero, Emile rather than his brother Caspar. The characters are on the whole well drawn and the world they inhabit both familiar and fanciful. It just lost my interest at one stage which ruined the experience for me as a whole.

I had the feeling like I was reading what was supposed to be two different books. It's not bad, touching at times but some parts clash with others too much to enjoy it fully.
