Could not get in to story. Life is too short to read an uninteresting book.

"You should read Ann Patchett," I vaguely remember someone telling me, not connecting that to this little paperback that I'd randomly selected last summer at the annual literacy association book sale until I found the book in a TBR pile recently. Finally making the connection with the advice and the book, I decided to give it a go.

Overall: parts of the storytelling were a bit slow, but that's just the nature of this story. It's a setting where time sort of stops as quickly as it starts again, but all of the space in between is just a really beautifully crafted pastry with tons of layers. There are all of these nuances of love between various characters and how they demonstrate that love can be communicated, even when there are barriers that would otherwise keep people apart.

In this hostage situation, you become like the hostages: lost in the days and the routines that establish themselves, and finding yourself loving each of the characters in different ways, then horrendously ripped from almost all of them as quickly as you were introduced.

A solid four star read. I'll be finding some more Patchett to stack on my shelf.

I’m pretty sure Patchett told us everyone’s fates at the beginning and I was still shocked and sad.
