I listened to the BBC Radio 4 dramatisation audiobook and it was absolutely riveting in its breadth and scope. Fantastic structure of short stories with the same characters and set around the Battle of Stalingrad. Harrowing eyewitness account of the brutality of WW2 and the halocaust in Russia and its effects on the people who did nothing to deserve any of it. Detailed insights and comparisons into communism and fascism and criticism of the overarching totalitarian states and the powerlessness of the people to resist their control.

An unedited manuscript. I guess all the effort was spent on the smuggling. It's difficult to get invested with the story or the characters. The characters appear in short and flat sketches that in some occasions feel pretentious. This ain't no War and Peace.
