The characters interesting, but things are moving so fast that I sometimes wanted things to slow down a little so I could lean into the moment and the characters emotions a bit more. So far the world is supporting several premise (
you only grow through extreme adversity, for one
) that I fundamentally don’t  agree with, but I suspect we’ll see different perspectives supported later.
I’d love to see a character who wants to be treated with the respect due their station without being an asshole. They worked hard for it, and also don’t have to be a dick!

I’ve been told repeatedly that the latter books are the best, which is exiting since this was a fun book already.

Summary:
In the wilds, Lindon rises to the power of Copper, during which he and Yarin are attacked. They are pushed by the remenants of their attacker, and spiritual beasts to a settlement around a pyramid which holds a treasured spear. Lindon and Yarin join the Fishers before a jail break gone wrong ends up with them both as miners. Eithan, secretly a powerful Underlord of the Aralias family, scouts them both and pushes Lindon especially through harrowing training which allows Lindon to reach Iron. They find the treasure but run into their enemies the Sandvipers where Lindon kills a the high gold heir. Eithan agrees Lindon will fight Jai Long, the second in command and another high gold in a year, after Lindon has spent a year training under the Aralias clan.
