This YA book will hit home with its story infused with super powers. It is comic book meets dystopian, perfect for your middle school reader. You feel the puberty induced emotional conflict as is prevalent in the age group only exasperated by super powers one is learning to control. Throw in the need to belong and an internal conflict relative to peer pressure - middle school meets Marvel. An easy read and good for establishing right and wrong as well as believing in one’s self.

I love Middle Grade books. They're always so sweet + fluffy and + have "happily ever after" endings!!

Spoiler: This book is not sweet. It isn't fluffy either, and there's a scary epilogue that left me wanting more.

This book is not your average MG book. There's a super-power terrorist group, kids that experience near-death experiences in other dimensions and some detailed fight scenes. I love that so much - it's not as "kiddy and happy" as typical MG books, but not as "dark and twisty" as YA either.

The kids have super cool powers.

It kind of reminds me of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I loved that book so much, and this is like a more modern version of it. (ALSO I WANT DENISE'S POWER. SEEING THE FUTURE - HOW COOL IS THAT? AND ALSO KYLE'S POWER - TELEPORTING!! OH WAIT NO I WANT ALL OF THEIR POWERS. #greedy :P)

The District is so creepy.

It knows about everything. It's like there's a surveillance camera following you everywhere. The police force values secrecy over people's safety and it's just so wrong. +I feel so sorry every time Damon gets bullied by other kids in his neighborhood. Honestly, are kids that evil nowadays?

Damon is such a tough little cookie!

At first, he gets rejected by the Power Club, but he keeps on practicing using his powers and at last impresses one of the club members. I also admire him for standing up to bullies and always fighting for justice.

Sometimes he comes up with the dumbest ideas, but he always manages to fix them at the end.

Final thoughts

I'm really looking forward to reading Book Two and hope to get to learn more about the terrorist group and Calvin (he's such a dark, mysterious boy!) Will recommend this to fans of Middle Grade, Young Adult, Fantasy and Dystopia!
