There's an interesting idea in this book, but the execution was lacking for me. It's unevenly paced with a slowish build up giving way to bursts of action that are over in a blink. Maybe this is meant to echo the game of chess, but as a reading experience it's unsatisfactory.

Things really go off the rails in the the third section, where things get rather silly.  I get the idea, but it felt like reading a children's book. This part of the book also features one of the most irritating characters I've come across in ages. The ending is quite clever, but by then I'd had enough and just wanted it to be over.

As lovely as the prose is, the book is a bit dry.
