I didn't understand why no-one had an Irish accent when the book is set in Dublin. The characters who had grown up in Ireland sounded American. It also didnt help that they often referred to dollars not euros (and degrees fahrenheit?)! The main character's narration also sounded kinda robotic at times, and i often found it a little off. Some of the other characters were okay and more engaging to listen to though (apart from the american-ness)
That aside it was quite a sweet story, i really liked the closeness nishat had with her sister, and her nan, and with her family more generally. I liked the narrative choice that she came out to her family right at the start of the story rather than it being left to the denouement. I also enjoyed how believably petty and self absorbed she was as a teenage girl. Some plot points/character details were left kinda unresolved but it didnt bother me too much. The discussion/exploration of cultural appropriation, racism etc felt somewhat underdeveloped as it stops being a source of conflict when convenient. It is much more for tweenage/YA audiences than adults.
