OH MY GOD. like always, his style is just so. fucking. good. it's rich and deep and his word choice is SO unique and beautiful. however it sometimes is useless, all in all i think he distracts too much from his own story sometimes by describing in a bit too much detail. HOWEVER. stunning. concerning. riveting. people complain it's too long but the flow is good enough that it passes quickly

First book of 2022!!! And it's not a romance?! I'm as shocked as you are. Like his previous work, Doerr writes with such respect and love for the human spirit in the face of adversity and pain. I found myself fighting back tears at several points during the story, not just grief and longing (which oh wow those hurt), but for the joy and purpose these characters held. While the plot of a story binding us together through the ages is certainly nothing new, it's timeless. While the pace is slow, it's worth it to savor the message in it's beauty and it's pain.

This is a book that is hard to classify. Is it literary fiction? Historical fiction? Science fiction? All three? Regardless of what you call it, the characters are richly written, and the three stories are each compelling in their own right. This is a 600 page book that, at times, reads like a thriller. About two-thirds of the way through, I learned something that made me want to cry. And at the end, I found myself wanting to hug this book and read it again. The central theme is so brilliantly summed up by this line: “The world as it is is enough.” This is probably the easiest five-star review I’ve given all year.
