DNF at 25%

There were some things that intrigued me about this book - a political romance is a new one, as is the
MMC being a victim of domestic abuse from a woman with a personality disorder
.

I could not vibe with the characters in the first quarter of the book. While I was hoping this would land firmly in romance territory the actual politics took over and it became too didactic for me, which may have been okay if I’d connected with either of the leads. I DNF at the point where the FMC casually said,
straight white men ruin everything
. In addition the FMC’s relationship with her mother was done extraordinarily well - but was such a trigger for me that with the other issues I couldn’t do it any more.

A novel using the classic Romeo & Juliet trope without anyone dying. While the author doesn't reinvent the wheel by any means, it is still a good, light-hearted read.

My only major gripe outside of it being slightly predictable in some areas is
how the author decided to approach the topic of borderline personality disorder (BPD) early on in the book.

This book would be great to listen to during a long drive or flight!

Super fast enjoyable read! I finished in a day, sorry to everyone behind me in the Libby queue, LOL! I should have moved this one to the top of my TBR list.

Not the Plan by Gia De Cadenet is an engaging workplace romance that explores complex themes. The chemistry between Isadora and Karim is palpable from their first meet-cute, and their forbidden romance is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at times. With a setting in California state politics and a peek behind how the legislature operates, there is a layer of tension and complexity added to the story as these characters navigate the difficult ethical dilemmas of their jobs while trying to pursue their own desires. If you enjoy romance novels with a lot of depth and emotional resonance, then I would recommend adding Not the Plan to your reading list.

I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Ballantine in exchange for an honest review.
