Beneath a Scarlet Sky takes readers on a journey through the eyes of young Pino Lella. Pino is a fantastic narrator, and Sullivan does an incredible job of making the reader feel like they are right with Pino every step of the way, through joy, love, tragedy, and incredible grit. The novelization of Pino Lella's true life story is set amid World War II in Italy, revealing a front of the war rarely discussed.

This book has been one of the most profoundly enlightening book that I have come across. Reading about Peno Lela, and his surviving the war - left me humble and brought about paradigm shift in the way I viewed life. Having completed the book, I am profoundly grateful that I had the good fortune to be born during the times of relative peace in the world. This book is a must read to anyone who is looking for a heart-wrenching story about a young man who endured the second great war and its hardships. Mark T. Sullivan has done a marvelous job of telling a very complex and gut wrenching story in such a way - that you can't help but fall in love with the narrative and go along with the roller-coaster ride of Peno's life.

This book just kept getting better and better as it went on. It's based on the true story of Pino Lella, a 17 year-old who led Jews out of northern Italy through the Alps to safety during World War II. He also became a spy for the Italian Resistance by becoming a driver for the head of the Nazi High Command in Italy. Pino witnessed the unimaginable. Beneath the Scarlet Sky is a remarkable story of courage, love, and the will to survive. 5-stars!
