I read 'Beneath a Scarlet Sky' by Mark T. Sullivan. I found it on a list of 25 best books for men. It's a non-fiction about a 17 yr old kid who risks his life avoiding Nazis in WW II, crossing the Alps in winter many times to help an underground railroad to get Jewish people out of Italy to safety of Switzerland. Then the book gets interesting.... Pino Lella becomes a driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers. What a great book! Maybe get a box of tissues handy. Highly recommended!

I heart Pino Lella. A story I will never forget

I am glad I decided to listen to this book on audible during a long road trip because I doubt I would've finished it otherwise. I felt the story dragged on (especially during the first half) and I didn't feel very connected to the characters. I did enjoy learning about WWII from the Italian perspective as that is something I didn't have any knowledge on going into it. I also enjoyed learning about what became of the characters in the aftermath of the war.
Whether or not General Leyers knew Pino was the Observer the whole time or not is something that I am left debating.

Giving this a 3.5, overall an enjoyable read but it did take me a bit to get into it. I found the writing style to be a bit lacking at times, especially at the beginning and in the romance scenes. However, the story was quite interesting and there were definitely parts that were page-turners.

A WWII story based on the true story of Pino Lella. Pino lives in Milan, Italy with his family. When Milan is bombed by Allied Forces, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews to escape over the Alps. But, his 18th birthday is approaching - so to, his involvement in war. To try to protect Pino, his parents convince him to enlist in the German army. Pino ends up becoming a personal drive for General Hans Leyers who reports directly to Hilter. Pino uses this opportunity to spy for the Allied Forces - helping to end the war. Appreciate the Italian perspective.
