Intense all the way through. Makes you reflect on how you would behave in such a situation. Heartbreaking and powerful.

Couldn't put this one down! I wanted to find out how the story ended up but didn't want to finish it. Great story!

Personally, I thought the writing was at times simplistic, but overall a touching and well paced story.

However, I'm quite torn after reviewing some of the controversy online surrounding the novel. (https://arengario.net/misc/misc261EN.html, https://arengario.net/misc/misc261EN.html, multiple goodreads/reddit forums.)

Sullivan describes the tale as historical fiction, but certainly the novel gained traction due to supposedly being more based on Lella's true story than on fiction. Inman's account makes one wonder just how little of the story is true, though. I am not sure what to believe, and sadly that has detracted a lot from my experience of the story.

Really sat at a 4 stars for me for most of the book. Seeing Pinos picture at the end really hit me though. I really hated how often the author used page breaks? Like there was sometimes a 0.1 second difference between the page break, and it added nothing to the suspense of those moments. I wish we could know Leyers reaction to this story being told.
