Amazing true story of Pino Lella, an Italian boy who played a significant role in WW II Italy. The Audible book was movingly narrated by Will Damron, but I'm sure I would've loved actually reading the written word.
I learned a new word: vorarbeiter, meaning foreman/overseer. I don't really get why Leyers would call Pino that.

Excellent writing, amazing story. Highly recommend
There are few words that describe what I got from this book.
Thank you for writing it. I have read many novels around WWII but you are correct few are written about Italy. It will stay with me for a lifetime.

The high recommendations for this book are true! What a story!!
Closer to a 3.5 than a 3. Overall I liked this book, but after I finished it I was like, "that was fine". I think if you really love ww2 novels or conversely have not ready many recently you'd enjoy this. But I feel there are better books you could start with.
The story was engaging and the life of Pino during the war is incredible. But I feel the author approached the story at a surface level that left me wanting more consideration of the complexities of war. There are also some unanswered questions left at the end of the novel that were a result of lost documents but it was still frustrating to not have some more closure on certain figures.
*Read for the book club I run at work.

An excellent story based on a hero who went beyond for his country & the good of all. He was basically a kid!-only 17. Such bravery & decency. I loved Pino & I loved his family. This author told this story so well.
