I’ve never been a big fan of serial stories, much preferring one big chucky book I can devour over the course of a couple of hours, yet when I started the Dragon School series I told myself I would be sticking with it. Unfortunately, I slipped off the wagon for a while. I managed books one through four, then slipped. A couple of months passed, but I finally made myself go back and jump into the story again. After all, I was enjoying it so much and I need to see how these things came together.

I will be honest and say going so long between the stories left me a little bit confused at first, unsure if I was remembering details correctly. This is very much a series where you get the best enjoyment through reading them as they’re released – or waiting until there are multiple stories to read and devouring them back to back. Fortunately, my confusion lasted a very short time period – it wasn’t long before I was sucked back into the story.

Each instalment of the Dragon School series brings us new information, sucking us ever deeper into the world. In Dragon School: Sworn, the world expands in the most wonderful of ways. Obviously I’m not going to give details, just know it opens up plenty more possibilities for the future of the series. The details that come to light promise lots of fun in the future, and you’ll be rapidly turning the pages to receive all the details.

Having been reminded how fun this series is, I plan not to fall off the wagon again. In fact, upon finish Dragon School: Sworn, I jumped straight into the sixth instalment, then the seventh, and then the eighth, desperate to get up to date.

There are writing/technical errors (Kindle version), but overall a good read. I'm hooked into reading the rest of the series!

Review: After Savette’s rescue I was excited to see what came after despite memories of my previous reading coming back to me as I read the books. With an injured Leng and Savette injured, Amel has no choice but to follow the riders who followed them as Leng said they were friends. The women that rescued them are Dashira and Ephretti who are members of the Lightbringers, a sect born to prevent the Dusk Covenant achieving what they want and Amel seems to be in the middle of it all. As the initiates have stumbled onto something they aren’t supposed to know about, Ephretti wants to find Lenora and bring her in before they put all of them before Hubric. However, Savette’s injuries are mental and while Raolcan is doing everything he can for her, it isn’t enough.
After meeting one of the high ranking members of the Lightbringers, Hubric Duneshifter, Lenora is going to be given to Ephretti as an apprentice while Hubric takes on Amel as he is the only other purple rider except Leng. However, Dashira is trying to stop Leng from perusing a relationship with Amel, offering her sister instead but I know that Amel and Leng are going to be together despite the odds and the rules against it. Hubric calls a Magika to heal Savette the best he can while he takes Amel to be sworn in before the Dominar himself. However, on the way she is pulled aside by Prince Raktaran who tells he knows of Starie’s wish to destroy both nations and he needs her help in stopping a war by telling him where Savette is. Amel doesn’t want her friend to be more hurt than she already is and informs the Prince as such when he says that he choose her because he needs to see her again. He also asks her to keep a close eye on one of his men during the ceremony as he will present himself on behalf of his nation and Amel agrees despite his threats towards her safety.
During the ceremony for her to be sworn in as an apprentice under Hubric, Raolcan lets her know that someone is happening with Savette and she needs to return as soon as possible but she can’t when Prince Raktaran is before he to be heard by the Dominar. Raktaran asks for Savette as his bride as was originally agreed and the Dominar deliberates but it is clear that some of the men Raktaran is with don’t agree with his decision. After that it is Amel’s turn to be sworn in and as the Dominar accepts her pledge he warns her to watch the Dark Prince and Amel is more confused than ever but she doesn’t have time to dwell on it when a huge explosion happens that came from Ephretti’s home, meaning it could only be Savette but she is also getting no response from Raolcan.
The ending scenes of Sworn were intense as we see Raktaran’s men turn on him and try to kill the Dominar but the dragons come to the rescue just in time but Hubric tells Amel that the Dusk Covenant will take the city and they can’t go back to help anymore. All they can do is flee to fight another day which they certainly will. Overall, Sworn was one of my favourite books in the series so far as we have waiting literally a ¼ of the series for Amel and Leng’s first kiss and that heartfelt confession for him about waiting until he can promise all of himself to her almost had me in tears. Despite these books being so short and wanting more for each one, I love this series so much and it is definitely my go to for dragon fantasy. Not to mention, Raolcan is one of the funniest, sassiest dragons I have ever had the pleasure of reading about especially when teasing Amel about getting kisses from 2 human girls.
