so much better with a reread. really delicate and precise language in characterization plus incredibly impressive levels of thematic and literary cohesion across the collection, especially wrt joyce's sustained criticism on different aspects of colonial/class oppression in ireland.
Historias de Dublín, una ciudad paralizada en la que todo el mundo está así. Es un bello retrato de la ciudad mediante distintos personajes que nos muestran su parálisis. La última historia, la más significativa del libro, pero a mí la que más me marcó fue Eveline.
By and large, I found this to be an unrewarding read. Joyce seems to abhor conclusions and I kept looking for connections between the stories that were rarely to never there. Two stories did stand out from the rest in my eyes, A Painful Case, and The Dead. Both had the same themes as other stories in the book, but to my eyes the loss, longing, and loneliness in these two stories crystallized into something truly meaningful and touching. In fact, it is these two stories which lead me to give the book as a whole two stars instead of just one.
