lanikei's review
1.0
A book I got for free from one of my education classes. It was one that was supposed to be reviewed, but wasn't one I finished or actually submitted a review for. Probably a good thing.
Not only was the book fragmented, it often seemed rather offensive. The author's attempt at dialect was excessive and demeaning more than anything. I respect an attempt at education from a different perspective, but I felt that trying to cover slavery, the Pony Express, Indian relations, Lincoln's election, and a coming of age story was just overwhelming. There was so much going on, that I didn't feel anything was covered in any useful amount of detail.
I did appreciate having several strong female characters, and of course it is always helpful to have minority perspectives on historical events. Still, it seemed like a very weak book to address issues that I would expect to be pretty interesting to young readers.
