I had a hard time keeping interest in the first several chapters of this book. My interest only took hold after the last 50% of the book, and even then, it took a bit of time to really hook me. That being said, the dark and tense note it ended on means I’ll need to read the next book.

Reviewed after reading all 3 books: Loved this ENTIRE series. Loved the forbidden love aspect and the build up of the love interest. Poppy's development throughout the series and the continuation of their love story, just beautiful.
I devoured this book and absolutely loved every moment of it. I can't wait to continue the series!
I’m in tears. I’m shocked. Simply no words.
Okay, I do have something to say: I WAS RIGHT. I KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS ABOUT HIM.
What started off as an okay book about an immature girl liking a boy turned into SO much more. Like never in a million years could I have guessed what happened between these pages. Okay, I did know for sure that Hakwe wasn’t a simple guard, I did guess that he was the Dark One after a while. But vampires???? Another posible war? Poppy’s life being a complete an utter lie? Never in a million years.
I’m so so glad the author decided to kill off the duke (go Casteel!) and the fucking lord. They were making it really hard to like this book with the way they were treating Poppy and no one (including her) doing anything about it. With that I gotta say, it fucking broke my heart to pieces when she explained to Vikter how she wasn’t allowed to live her life. How she had to stand there and just take the punishments and the rules and everyone else having a say in the way she was supposed to live her life. It broke my heart to pieces.
I would say the book starts getting good about 60% in. Before that, I liked them and the murders and mystery made me come back, but it wasn’t earth shattering. Poppy seemed like a pretty immature girl and the banter between them annoyed me. It seemed unnecessary and boring. But after they left the castle? THAT’S when the party got started. After that I couldn’t put the book down. All the twists and turns after they got to New Haven made me devoured the last 30% of this book.
And I have to say after Casteel took his place and acted as the prince he is? His character started making so much sense. His words had meaning. Everything clicked into place. I honestly can’t wait to read [b:A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire|54319549|A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (Blood and Ash, #2)|Jennifer L. I do hope it is a little more fast paced than this book.

“With my sword and with my life, I vow to keep you safe, Penellaphe,” he spoke, voice deep and smooth, reminding me of rich, decadent chocolate. “From this moment until the last moment, I am yours.”

“You’re an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature.” Pausing, he glanced down. “Nice weapon. Bloodstone and wolven bone. Very interesting…” His gaze flicked up. “Princess.”
“I hate you.” “No, you don’t.” “And I’m about to stab you,” I warned. “In a very violent manner.” Concern flickered across his face as he lowered the book. “Now that, I believe.”

Purity? I hated that word, the meaning behind it. As if my virginity determined my goodness, my innocence, and its presence or lack thereof was somehow more important than the hundred choices I made every day.

Hawke wasn’t the catalyst. He was the reward.
