Descended from the cities greatest umbra tamers, Mia thought that was her destiny, but that all changed when she met a wild red eyed umbra on the Nightmare Plains. However, everything changes until a surprise attack on Nubis when her parents are captured. Her only hope it to travel to the City of Light to find help. It all seems hopeless and Mia must conquer her fears and learn to harness her umbra taming abilities in order to complete the quest in time.
Mia and the Lightcasters was absolutely outstanding. A glorious fantasy story with vibes of Nevermoor, Amari and so many more books that are in my top ten. I was gripped quickly by this story and the plot never really let go. I’m pretty sure I read this in one sitting and loved every second. The author builds a magical world and the inclusion of lore every so often really aids the reader in creating the history of events that have happened prior to the story.
Mia is a reluctant hero – she has the power in her to do good, but it terrifies her. I like this as a trope and watching her forced to realise that she needs to step up and control her fear. The Reaper King is a formidable and shadowy villain shrouded in mystery and his intangible nature probably makes him even more scary! I hope we find out more going forwards (I’m assuming there’ll be a sequel – there needs to be!). Lastly, the umbra…I need my own umbra so so so badly. I love these magical and mythical beasts. The bond between an umbra and its tamer is reminiscent of daemons in Philip Pullman’s worlds and I look forward to learning more.

I loved this book. For most books I’ve read you usually have to get two or three chapters in before anything really happens. In The LightCasters, it’s action packed from the beginning! Between Mia having a frightening scare with a red eyed umbra, to her getting her very own umbra and concurring her fear of them. This book is full of twists and turns, keeping things as exciting as possible without it being too overwhelming. Even once you think you know how the story is going to go, some part of it sneaks out from under you drawing you further into the world of Nubis.
The supporting characters are fabulous throughout this whole book as well. There’s some sass, frustration, tears and pure joy from them all, really making the book feel whole. As for the characters they’re up against, everyone you think Mia and her crew are safe.. they never are, BUT even the times they get caught somehow, someway Mia and her crew get lucky and can wiggle their way out.
You can definitely tell there’s more to the story than what’s just in this book. I can’t wait to see where The LightCasters next adventure will take them and everything else we get to learn about The City of Light, The Queen, The Reaper King, Miles and more.

- Ein spannendes Leseerlebnis -
Die Chroniken von Lunis hat mich nicht nur positiv überrascht sondern auch zu 100% abgeholt. Ich war mir anfangs nicht sicher, ob mich das Buch würde fesseln können oder ob es vielleicht nicht spannend genug für mich ist - es ist schließlich schon für eine etwas jüngere Zielgruppe geschrieben. Doch das hat für mich schon sehr schnell keine Rolle mehr gespielt.
Die Geschichte ist wahnsinnig kreativ ausgearbeitet mit den Umbra und den Zähmern. Mit Nubis, wo nie die Sonne scheint und der Albtraumebene, in der so magische Pflanzen wachsen. Mit Stella, das so anders ist als alle anderen Orte.
Mia ist eine starke und mutige Protagonistin, die sich sehr für Gerechtigkeit einsetzt und ihre Familie und Freunde über alles liebt. Sie ist eine liebevolle große Schwester und trotz der schwierigen und verzwickten Situation, die sie so oft fast hat verzweifeln lassen, bleibt sie stark und kämpft weiter.
Auch TJ, Lucas, Jada und Miles waren authentische und vielseitige Charaktere, die ich schnell ins Herz geschlossen habe.
Am liebsten jedoch mochte ich Lux und Nox, die Umbra. Sie waren witzig, liebenswert und charakterstark.
Die Handlung war viel spannender und fesselnder als erwartet. Die Situationen, in die die Protagonisten geraten, waren authentisch und nachvollziehbar, spannend und sinnvoll verknüpft. Und auch das Ende war gut ausgearbeitet, ich habe die letzten Seiten in einem Rutsch weggelesen und bin jetzt sehr gespannt auf Band 2 und darauf, wie sich diese Geschichte weiterentwickelt.
Alles in allem eine überraschend spannende und kreative Geschichte, die mich komplett überzeugen und packen konnte.

Nachdem in der Beschreibung stand, dass das Buch etwas für alle Harry Potter sowie Keeper of the Lost Cities ist, hat es mich als großer Fan der beiden Reihen natürlich neugierig gemacht. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.
Das Cover finde ich wunderschön. Gerade wenn man es sich genauer anschaut nachdem man das Buch gelesen hat und einem die kleinen Details auffallen.
Die Geschichte selbst hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen. Die Idee mit den Umbras hat mich etwas an die Patronusse aus Harry Potter erinnert. hauptsächlich habe ich mir ihr Aussehen so vorgestellt.
Mia ist eine Interessante Protagonistin, und obwohl sie ein Teenager ist, hat mich ihr Verhalten als erwachsene Leserin nicht genervt, was meistens bei jugendlichen Charakteren der Fall ist. Ihre Beziehungen zu den anderen Charakteren waren auch realistisch dargestellt.
Das Buch hatte ein gutes Stück Mystery da es bis zur Hälfte noch sehr viele offene Fragen gab, aber ohne das diese einen "abturnen" weiterzulesen.
Ich muss zugeben ich hätte mir ein kleines bisschen mehr Info sowie Szenen mit der Königin gewünscht.
Im Großen und Ganzen ein toller Einstieg und ich bin sehr gespannt wann die Fortsetzung kommt und wie die Geschichte mit Mia, ihrer Familie und ihren Freunden weitergeht

The way I devoured this book! It was everything I could have wanted in a middle grade book. It was an interesting plot line and the characters were great! I can’t wait for book two!

I loved this book! I loved the idea of Umbras and how they were born in dark and light. I also loved the world it was set in and the challenge of writing a story in a setting where it was always night. It had me always wanting to read it. Very good book. I think Mia and Luca could have been a little more like regular siblings and how siblings sometimes fight. But I did like their connection just it should have been a little more like normal siblings. But I’m not taking any stars off for that, because overall it was really good. Recommended for anybody who likes reading fantasy books and if you just like books in general. Make sure you read this great book.

A brilliantly immersive and action packed magical adventure filled with well developed characters, exciting world building and heaps of imagination. Works fantastically as a standalone but is equally a great start to the new series to come.
