An entertaining read. While much of the first half could have been FAR shorter and less verbose, the final third had twists (or at least reasonings for the twists) that genuinely surprised me without seeming absurd or far-fetched.

A story about an aspiring young writer who becomes an assistant to the famous novelist who writes under a pseudonym. On a research trip to Morocco, the famous novelist dies in a car crash and the remaining book is how the aspiring young writer seeks to take over as the pseudonym. That was the description I had read before I read the book, and I wish I hadn’t!! It gave too much away. I kept waiting for this trip to Morocco and the ensuing car crash. I couldn’t enjoy the first 2/3 of the book because I knew where it was going - in the famous writer’s death and the journey of the aspiring writer to take over. I wish I had gone in blind and just enjoyed the ride to get there. However, the final 1/3 of the book after the car crash I enjoyed so much more because I didn’t know what to expect and several plot twists did surprise me - it was much more of an enjoyable ride to not know where it was going!

A good, quick read that you can escape into. The MC is fucked up and impulsive, desperate for the fame she craves. Her boss/mentor is fucked up and volatile and manipulative. Together, we get a super weird psychological thriller was totally gripping and shocking by the end.

Florence Darrow is a struggling writer, with high hopes of becoming a well-known published author. She lands the opportunity to be an assistant to a famous popular author, writing under the pseudonym Maud Dixon.

The story focuses on the relationship and interaction between Florence and "Maud". I felt it dragged a bit in the middle, and I had a few issues with plot and character development.

That being said, it was still packed with lots of dark humour, and snarky one-liners. The writing was fun to read and engaging. I think it will be a great summer/beach read.

This comes out on March 2, 2021 so be sure to check it out. Thank you to HBG Canada for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
