So I picked this book up on a whim as lover of thrillers when I visited the most incredible bookstore and I do not regret it at all. So lets go with the sandwich method for this review.
The Good- Top Bun:
This is a well written story that knows how to build tension. It has just enough mystique to really draw you in. The narrative style is not that unique but puts what it has to good use. It makes good use of the whole "Narrator talks to the reader" style of writing. the mystery definitely draws you in and much like out titular magic cottage, has a mysterious and magical air that really gets it hooks into you.
The Bad-Filling:
I'll be plain. The build up was way too long! It felt like we teetered in the edge of knowing for a little too long. To me at least the mystery behind the house was evident really early on and it really frustrated me that the characters intentionally turned a blind eye to it! I do completely understand why and its explained in the story but nevertheless its an aspect that just didn't work for me
The Good- Bottom Bun:
I really enjoyed the entire concept on this book! The idea that Magic comes from a place and not a person is always a fun take. Its a force to be harnessed but can work wonders. I also really liked the incomprehensible nature of it. It really made it feel like a force to the reckoned with. A nice soft magic system if you like those.
Overall: This was an enjoyable read that delivered on its promise of a magical chiller. I can see its age in tis writing with how some women and drugs are discussed. But if you can look past that its a good way to spend a day reading.
