Not my favorite.

This was a great premise, believe me. Lauren Kate always seems to find old legends and twists them into something miraculous. I don't think I've ever read a book about Atlantis, but this one had potential. But it missed the mark.

Sure, I really liked this book, like a lot. But Lauren Kate had so much room for something EVEN better. For some reason I felt like this book seemed a little... mundane. It's the plot of every book. A girl starts seeing things, she thinks she's crazy, but actually she's some special girl who has the potential to save the world or potentially DESTROY it.

So then she has some conflicting crap where she thinks that she's going to destroy the entire world, but actually at the end, she doesn't and ACTUALLY she has to save the world.

WHY CAN'T THERE BE A BOOK WHERE THERE'S THIS NORMAL GIRL WHO DOES NOTHING? I'm kidding, they already have that. It's called Fault in Our Stars and it's incredibly horrible.

BUT WHAT ABOUT A BOOK ABOUT THIS GIRL WHO ACCIDENTALLY DESTROYS THE ENTIRE WORLD? Yep, that's the plot. She destroys the entire world. Haha, I wish there was a book like that because I would read it.

Anyway, this book was GREAT, believe me. But it was still too much like Fallen. Like come on, there were two guys into Eureka like there were two guys into Luce. However, one of those guys is good, and the other is BAD, evil even. And there goes the love triangle, because one of the guys is EVILLLL.

So I rate this with an overall: 4 stars, and the words, "Making Eureka a mermaid would've been a less cliche story."

Very captivating and interesting storyline. I can't wait to read the next book of the series!
Eureka's mother dies from a huge wave that was purposefully created to kill Eureka. Ander is part of a seedbearers cult, part of a group trained to kill Selene's Tearline, but cannot because he falls in love with her because he's watched her his whole life. He saves her and helps her. But Atlas takes over Brooks' body and tried to make her cry. In the end, her stepmother dies and she cries and the world does flood but her twin siblings, father, and Ander are saved in the bubble. Brooks is still possessed but I think he loves her and then the book ends.

I adore Lauren Kate!!! She once again has written and awe inspiring story... I easily fell in love with Eureka's story. When I reached the end, I was left wanting more. Waiting for the Alantian king to show up, for something to happen.. I want to know more about the book of love... I want book 2 :)

I mostly enjoyed this book, apart from a few issues. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series.

I stopped at page 209 because the characters and the way they're portrayed are insufferable

I'm so glad I found this book used at BAM! I took a chance on the discounted price. The last 100 pages or so held my attention so much I couldn't stop!

I gave this 2 1/2 stars. It was OK. It kept me interested and I liked the mythology of the lost city of Atlantis. Lauren Kate is creative and comes up with interesting stories. The problem I have it that the characters are not really likeable. Eureka is not an enjoyable character to read about. She is so jaded/traumatized by her mother's death that she won't let anyone in. She is extremely moody and angry and halfway through you just want to smack her. The setting is really interesting (Louisiana Bayou) and creepy. I probably will read the next book in the series just because I was sucked into the premise and care enough to read on. I don't think I'd recommend this to teens. While there weren't any sex scenes in this book, there were too many sexual references (including glamourizing promiscuity in the character of Cat) for me to recommend this especially to younger YA readers.
