Storytelling in this volume was kind of blunt. Richeh and Euini had character development that happened over the span of like, 20 pages total. I didn't really feel much for the characters this volume, aside from Agott maybe.
As always, the art and the world building are immaculate. Love the creativity and dynamicism put even into the design of the panels.

Things start to get chancy in this volume. The main focus is that Agott (and Richeh) gets to attempt the second trial. Of course, this gives an opportunity for the Brimmed caps to attack. And they really strike hard.
We learn more about two characters in this volume, Richeh and Euini (another apprentice who is also doing the trial). The second trial is held at Cape Romonon and we get to hear the story of how magic was misused in the past.

They constructed a snaking road that only those permitted would be able to traverse. And upon the rest of the cave they carved a spell of mazes that kept those who offered nothing from ever reaching Romonon
The apprentices need to traverse the path (which twists and turns like an epic roller-coaster)
I love seeing Qifrey able to lead Richeh to a different worldview in a way in which she can feel in control. And Euni... it was nice to see him gain confidence in himself even for just a short time. This volume is one of my faves in the series.

These books are cute and always have a good underlining message. These books will pay off with the found family trope.
