Maybe a higher 3 than a true 4. Really fascinating exploration of a subject I was unfamiliar with. It re-contextualizes a lot of major ideas about the Nazis and Hitler, though this not being a purely academic book means it’s not situated super specifically within other scholarship. I’d love to read more on how this line of research has been incorporated into larger Nazi scholarship, because it would seem to be a rather large omission based on this author’s arguments for its pervasiveness and claims of under-discussion.

Rampant drug production and use by leadership and the military in a society that also criminalized and imprisoned street-level drug users. Military activities underpinned and spurred on by said drug usage. Hitler’s years-long substance dependency as evidenced by the detailed notes of his personal physician. There’s a lot of stuff in here. Grotesque, hypocritical stuff.

Meh prose- not sure if it was a translation issue or original style but the branch-offs into conjecture get a little purple in places. A lot of scene setting. Organization was also a little disjointed in places.

While I’ve read multiple arguments about the validity of the information, this is still an interesting book.
