This was an interesting premise, even if the execution was a bit uneven. I love the idea of the young women getting to write their own endings and wished the author had gone with that.

This was so very very interesting. It follows the woman on a few of Shakespeare’s stories, a few I’m familiar with, and a few I’m not. Even though I was not very familiar with a few of the original stories by Shakespeare, I didn’t really feel lost or like I was missing something.

Joy McCullough really does such a fantastic job at giving these underappreciated woman a voice and a chance to change their own story, to take control for once.

It’s told in verse format, like many other Joy McCullough books and I really enjoyed that, she really has a knack for it. It’s so beautiful and impactful and makes for a really easy and quick read.

Quotes~

“Each considers how these acts of violence against their bodies were acceptable to the world, while their desires were not.”

“I’m sorry you can’t conceive of stories with happy endings, but I let you tell yours how you wanted to, because the choice is the point. I respected your choice. So now I choose to tell mine. To finish mine. And if you don’t like it, you don’t have to listen. But my story is no less meaningful if I don’t die tragically.
I deserve your respect”

“They cannot fathom the idea
that I might have made my own choice
taken my own action.
They think me old enough to wed
if they have chosen it, but not
if I’m the one to fall in love.”

“Not all stories can be told. Some are so dark and twisted, their telling would undo the world.”

Feminist retelling of Shakespeare without harming the integrity of the stories or forcing a happy ending on everyone. The characters are real, relatable, and brilliant. These women have lived a torturous eternity, but they are reclaiming it.
