Enter the Body
“Of course we have choices. But you make it sound like if we were just smarter, then the entire patriarchal system built up around us wouldn’t be able to hold us back. Sometimes you make all the right choices and shitty things still happen.”
This book was amazing! In a trap door beneath a theater, Shakespeare’s dead heroines (and pretty much all of the women brutally unalived in his plays) gather together and rewrite their stories on their terms.
The story focuses on some of the heaviest hitters throughout Shakespeare - Juliet, Ophelia, Cordelia, and Lavinia. Filled to the brim with themes of love, father-daughter relationships, brutality towards women, the concept of choice, and bonus Shakespearean literary/general poetry analysis, if I could force everyone to read this, I would! It’s also a YA so I think it should be required reading for young girls.
Double and triple bonus, some of it is written on iambic pentameter, and also the voice acting for the audio is great. She also uses phrases like, “Who hurt you??” Extremely thoughtful and honest about the experience of being a woman while also clever and hilarious.
Thanks to Libro.fm for my ALC.
