'Bone Parish Vol. 1' by Cullen Bunn with art by Jonas Scharf is a horror graphic novel about a new street drug that is, frankly, pretty gross.

New Orleans is known for a lot of things, but now there is a new street drug called Ash. It's made from a combination of bones depending on the particular high you want. One family knows how to make it. Now a bigger crime syndicate from New York wants to buy them out, but it isn't that simple because a dangerous gang from Mexico wants in on the deal.

Sniffing the ashes of the dead doesn't appeal to me, but much of drug use leaves me that way. Still I liked this story of a supernatural drug war and a family caught in the past and fighting to keep what they have. The art is good too. The story is pretty creepy at times.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from BOOM! Studios and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange for my open and honest review.

I loved this story. Mafia meets magic. The story begins with a man in the street under the influence of a necromantic drug that allows you to see or live the life of the dead body the drug is made out of. The drugs are created with different purposes, so the family needs different bodies with a different background to make them. The story is dark and gloomy, albeit a typical story arc. Family with a heart of gold has a tragedy, strikes revenge, sniffs the charred remains of their enemies as they are driven before them, and tacos. Just kidding, no tacos.

This is a winner of a book, good story, great art, interesting and inventive take on mafia families. Check it out.

Intense, creepy. The beginning was a bit slow and boring, but it is worth the wait. The ending is the real deal, how everything changes and becomes a psychological horror filled with surprises and plot twists. Awesome. Will keep an eye and see what happens next.

This was a great issue! It had impact, great attention to the small details, some flashbacks that gave great characterisation, and beautiful gritty illustrations. I loved the plot and the way it was executed. Cullen Bunn has become a new favourite in the graphic novel department.

L'he acabat sense avorrir-me, si bé tampoc m'ha aportat gairebé res de nou.

I'm not a huge horror fan. I burned myself out on it when I was much younger so I tend to avoid the genre unless it crosses over with my general interest in fantasy. Bone Parish seemed to cross over enough into Urban Fantasy to pique my interest and so I grabbed the first volume. I was not disappointed. I'm really picky about graphic novels for no real reason so I've been trying to correct that as so many good stories are told via the medium and by being picky I only deny myself those stories. Bone Parish made this easy as it's just about perfect from start to finish.

I have really liked [a:Cullen Bunn|591619|Cullen Bunn|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1288640180p2/591619.jpg]'s horror work with [a:Brian Hurtt|63767|Brian Hurtt|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] (The Sixth Gun series and the Damned series) and [a:Tyler Crook|4615365|Tyler Crook|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] (the gorgeous Harrow County). But the little I have read of Bunn's superhero stuff didn't do much for me, and I haven't looked at the large, large number of horror series he has done with other artists.

This volume didn't convince me to search them out. It's set in modern-day New Orleans where we are following the Winters, a family dealing "ash". This drug (made from the remains of the dead) connects you with the experiences of the deceased, albeit in ways that aren't consistent. Sometimes the user channels memories, sometimes they gain the skills of the deceased, and sometimes they just get to talk with them. And, of course, there's the mysterious dangerous side of ash, where a bad trip leads to a violent occult death. You also get the more expected stories of drug dealing (crooked cops and rival gangs trying to claim the business). [a:Jonas Scharf|15967443|Jonas Scharf|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] provides more realistic illustration than the artists mentioned above with some nice use of panel layouts. But overall, nothing really sang to me. Not a series where I expect to pick up a second volume.
