Difficult to read. Very slow, very distant, no character to get behind. An intense depiction of a period in history I knew nothing about, though, with an incredible villain. Happy I've read it but can't say I enjoyed the process, exactly.

depraved.  The 'wild west' and manifest destiny created a Level of atrocities probably greater than the dark ages. Enlightenment was only bringing pure hateful fire to the darkness.

I don’t have words. This book is so much work to fully grasp and appreciate, but it is more than worth the work. This is true, brutal art. Cormac McCarthy is a literary force of his own.

Arresting and fascinating. When my original reading has sunk in I can’t wait to re-read this. It is such a rich novel, different from anything I have read and incorporates compelling themes and characters. It is challenging to begin with and I found a section and around a third of the way difficult to continue reading: by the end I couldn’t put it down, I was so invested in these characters and their world.
