I really enjoyed Midnight's Daughter. Looking forward to [b:Death's Mistress|6203049|Death's Mistress (Dorina Basarab, #2)|Karen Chance|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1233794517s/6203049.jpg|6383596]!

Wade through the weird family dynamics and the emotional immaturity and the fight scenes that go on for way too long, and there was an interesting set up and plot.

2.5

I've got to be honest and say I didn't love this. It felt all over the place, Dory randomly running from one fight to the next and meeting characters who play no further role in the book. Ironically, I also felt like there were fights we should have seen (because they were more relevant to the plot) and we were only told she blacked out and woke up having killed everyone. In the end, she didn't even fight Dracula, as the blurb suggests, but some other random villain, while someone else took Drac. (Actually that's a perfect example of the book, the focus slipping off somewhere else with the important stuff happening in the background.)

Further, the way the book set up the evil family and then tried to redeem them didn't work for me and I was bitter that the whole thing basically came down to an "Oops sorry."

I did appreciate that men were sexualized and victimized. I know that seems an odd thing to praise, but usually it's ONLY WOMEN who get this treatment and it was nice to see a little parity. And I can also imagine some of the problems of this book being because it's the first in a series and had to set everything else up. Despite not liking it much, I might be willing to give book two a chance to see if the things that annoyed me so much don't carry over.

Dorrie is unique- as a dhamphir she has inherited some vampire strengths and human vulnerabilities making for an interesting character. She appeases her own violent nature by hunting vampires and other creatures that step over the line, but maintains a friendship with her housemate, Claire. When Claire goes missing, Dorrie relunctantly collaborates with her father to hunt down her Uncle Drac (the Dracula of legend) in order to ensure her safety. Chance cleverly uses the relationships to reveal Dorrie's family background and how it has affected her without slowing the pace of the story.
Dorina, who is used to working alone, must team up with Louis-Cessare to track down Drac in the midst of political warfare between the Light and Dark Mages and coup attempts in the world of Fae. This provides lots of action as they battle their way through the various factions in their goal to bring down Dracula.
Initially Louis and Dorrie are wary of each other but eventually trust and then attraction develops. This happens quite naturally given the background they share and i look forward to the partnership developing in future books.
Midnights Daughter is a fun read, witty and fast paced, with a host of supernatural characters, a good start to a new series

I liked this but the characters didn't compel me like Cassandra's friends. Also I felt like Mircea was almost another character and not Cassie's boyfriend. I get that here he is the father, but I felt like... not sure. Still I liked how Dorina and Louis-Cesar bumped along. Olga, Radu, and her Stinky definitely add to the mix. Still, I was much of the time I was detached from the main story-line waiting for something else to happen. It did in the end with the mage and Louis-Cesar but it was a short happening. Drac seemed like the side story but got all the attention. The ending and explanations from Mircea made up for any slow parts in the Drac plot but it only ended up being a good read and not really good for me.

Set in the same world as the Cassie Palmer series this has a lot of the same characters as well. Dory is Mircea's daughter and it is so interesting to see this world from another point of view. I look forward to the next in the series.

Update from April 2011 reading

Louis-Cesar is so very dreamy as Dory's love interest. Seeing him from both her and Cassie's perspective makes him such a well rounded character.

August 2019 re-read

This time around I didn't really enjoy the Claire/Fey portions. They aren't my favorite in Cassie books either.

So glad I read the prequel novella because it made this story so much better. Looking forward to more Dory and her shenanigans.

Doesn’t matter how many times I read this book, it’s always so good

On par with Kim Harrison! Absolutely loved it.
