I appreciate that Kibuishi actually lets things fall apart & doesn't immediately patch them up

Very good story again! It's a shame for Max ...
Spoiler I was hoping he would get better in the story, but it will not be that way.
I can't wait to see how the story goes, it doesn't end very well so it's intriguing.

6 books in and still loving this series!

The plot is one of the more inconsistent of the series. It feels very crammed compared to other books in their series - which all have many more quiet moments and open space.

How this book ended up on my TBR: I read the first book and decided I wanted to read the entire series (which of course means waiting for the series to conclude) but probably didn't want to keep it. This is the second time I've read it, now that I have the final book in the series, and I'm sort of racing through them so that I can gift them to my friend's family.

The beginning of this book brings us directly to a resistance movement that's fairly well-organized. It seemed like we spent relatively little time on Cielis, and despite how not great it was prior to Emily's arrival, there were apparently some structures in place. Alyson, for example, has had some pilot training, and her father is a leader in the movement. Those who are deeply embedded in the movement are less trusting of the Stonekeepers, with them being more recent additions, and especially because they don't seem to hate the elves. It reminds me somewhat of Star Wars and the Empire and its separation from the Sith; they were essentially fighting the same cause, but the military and the Sith lords did not always align. (I know I could probably make a better argument with the Jedi Council and Corusant, but there's been less cinematic focus on the lighter side, and they were both messed up too. I digress.) This is to say that the movement does not favor Emily, Navin, Vigo, Leon, and certainly not Trellis or Luger, to their detriment.

Before the movement can really take the attack to the elf king, they find themselves followed and then attacked by Max and his forces. The group splinters, with Navin and Alyson serving as pilots and then joining a movement in Lucien. (Props to Trish; what a legend.) Emily, Vigo, and Trellis meet with Max, who is still uneasy after the last book but is dedicated to serving the elves. Like Trellis, though, he now knows he isn't serving the elves by serving the elf king. And I think he knows and accepts that he has played every available hand, and the remaining one is to throw in his lot with Emily and Trellis and let them take over. This book provides a great cliffhanger into the action of the next book.

The artwork, as always, is dark and gorgeous.

Three of these novels in one day was more than enough. Saving the final three for tomorrow!
