- Breathtaking, lurid prose unlike anything I've ever read before
- Really interesting (and less problematic) portrayal of literary madness
- Balances disgust and awe -- horrible scenes are described in an absolutely beautiful way

I think the only thing saving this book from a 1 star is the pretty prose. The “horror” is more discomforting.
