I really want to give this book a higher rating. The writing is one of the strongest of the High Republic novels, and the characters written are at some of their most compelling here compared to their other High Republic publishing appearances.
Unfortunately, the book ultimately suffers from so much of the plot development happening in other published work. It's terrible that so much of the motivation and developments that drive the events that occur here take place in other works, predominantly in some of the YA novels of the publishing strategy. It isn't clear that you need to go there to get answers but what happens here is so much more plain IF you read Path of Deceit.
To be clear, I'm usually a fan of multi-faceted storytelling the provides depth to a larger story. But this feels scattered and unclear that very little of the context for the story exists in the 'core' adult novels. If you want to follow the larger narrative with the background and motivations behind the antagonists of the High Republic storyline, you'll need to go to the YA stories. That's kind of a shame.
