Next to Croaker, I think Sleepy is my favorite Company Annalist. They employ much of the dry wit Croaker used, but in a refreshing new way. The first (of this particular Company Era) Annalist too young to remember the Company crossing the Sea, Charm, or Lady when she was THE Lady.
Lots of women working together in this adventure, which is a neat and interesting change of pace for the series
Up til now, the main women were Lady, Soulcatcher, and Darling (whose time has long since passed).
Faster moving than the last one.

While following a similar format as the last book, this one develops new members of the company, with the expectation there is a big payout coming in the final installment. Remember: Water Sleeps

It's a good book of the series, and sleepy is a great narrator, my only complaint is when she goes into religion. She keeps going into it, and yaking about her god being the one true god etc etc. I mean hey great you're religious no on else in the black company. Lets not keep mentioning your religion every time something that scares you happens.

Taut, cohesive (as in: not as baggy as some of the other titles in the series), and fascinating. Sleepy is a great narrator.

The first half is great, just what we all enjoy, with schemes and skulduggery. The second half is Cook at his weakest: world building and under described alien landscapes.
Probably one of the best BC books after the original trilogy, though

Fun story, great change of pace from the other books. Enjoyed the intrigue and getting some answers (maybe) about the deeper mythology of the world
