has some funny parts but the humor is way too over-the-top for my taste. He over-simplifies the stories in the crudest way possible and thinks that's funny. It can be, but he's just not clever enough for that. The book is cringe because you can tell he's trying way too hard.
for example:
etc. etc. etc. It gets boring very fast.

for example:
Spoiler
So one night Uranus is about to get busy
with Gaia again
I guess so he can father another baby and
then stuff it back into her
but instead of getting sex he gets a
SURPRISE PENISECTOMY
Cronus all jumping out from behind a rock
like “HAHA, GOT YOUR DICK, DAD.”
Which is something no son should ever have
to say to his father.
Then Uranus’s dick falls into the ocean
and makes a whole ton of foam
and that is where Aphrodite comes from
eventually
from dick foam.
You know that painting with her standing on
the shell with all the angels and stuff?
Dick foam.
All of it.
etc. etc. etc. It gets boring very fast.

I bought this book a couple of summers ago and had read about half of the book before sitting down and reading the entire thing. All of Ovid's (the author's psuedonym) retellings are funny and enjoyable, and there isn't much need for a previous knowledge of any myths to enjoy them. There's also no need to read the book in order; all of the myths stand on their own. What is best about Ovid's work is that, even though this book is an artistic retelling of the myths that often goes on tangents and has wild details that are not a part of the source material, at the core these myths are faithfully retold; you can get a basic and fundamental grasp of the myths' meanings.

3.5 stars. It was a fun re-read, but even so, the joke does get a little stale by the end, and I ended up flicking through the last pages. I'm still more than happy to track down his blog entries online, since there's a good 300 different ones, and many which weren't covered in this book.

I guess it might be funny if you're 13 or younger. Alas, I'm too old for fart jokes.

This has GOT to be the MOST
Hilarious
Funny
Dog- and cat-waking
LLOL (Literally Laughing Out Loud, not some of your run-o'-the mill lolling here)
Inapropes (it's a word! Ref: Happy Endings TV SHOW)
Did I say hilarious? Yes. Yes I did. But I made you look twice didn't I? That's right. You're a chump. Also, you should read this book.
You don't even need to know ANY of these myths and legends. Because basically, they've been "improved" by modern sensibilities and a shit-ton of swearing and explosions (but toned-down on the sex because, let's face it, the previous civilizations didn't have a puritan way of thinking).
Anywho, all that to say I've never laughed so much reading a book and I will definitely be gifting this to anybody I know that reads. (Spoiler-Alert re:XMas gifts guys!)

Pretty funny. If you like the podcast 'Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics' this has similar vibes but less history lessons.

Funny, irreverent, and accurate. This is a book that takes a look into the mythology we know and love and puts it in a modern perspective. It's as if you're chatting over coffee about the zany ways our collective ancestors made the world around them make sense. It highlights, in its own unique way, how similiar the human experience is in describing the intersection between how normal it is tell stories, and how terrifying the universe is, even when you have a good idea as to how and why. A quick, and delightful read.
