I have now read this book four times. Twice on audio and twice on paper. This has it all. The narrative flows tightly, the prose is beautiful, and Buehlman manages to write such vistas as we are used to seeing in the works of for example Gustav Doré and Hieronymus Bosch.

If this isn't my favorite novel, then it's very close.

Ok maybe 3.75... I WANTED to love this book. I have read Christopher Buehlman before and really enjoyed his writing, but this one just didn't do it for me. There was great character development certainly. And the story was pretty good? Just had a hard time keeping my attention.

It's sent way back in history, and it does follow along during the Black Plague as well as some other things that the folks just can't seem to figure out. Perhaps it was the time period that I didn't get into, or something else. I'll definitely read more of his books, just didn't love this one.
