For fans of The Chronicles of Narnia. I have been booktalking this without having actually read it. Now I have a student who wants to talk about nothing but this book so I decided it was time. I liked elements of this book but it didn't blow me away. I feel like it relied heavily on every known fantasy trope and it just felt like I had read this before.

I was a bit conflicted in this because the plot seemed geared towards a younger audience, but at the same time the length is geared towards an older audience. I find it hard to believe that younger kids would be willing to read such a long book. But who knows maybe I'm wrong because I probably would've read a book this long when I was younger. I just don't think I was the audience this book was geared towards so I didn't enjoy it as much. Probably won't read the next book in the series.

Overall, this was cute and fun. Loved the setting and the way the humans and animals of the woods interacted. The illustrations were fantastic. The author, however, used overly descriptive words. For a middle grade, I would have expected it the words to be a little more accessible. Also, there were some choices made that didn't feel appropriate for the reading age range or the 12 year old characters themselves. The same story could have been told without the use of alcohol, cigarettes, or placing guns in a 12 year old hands that doesn't know how to use it. The darker themes (baby sacrifice) and the fighting itself were fine, but the way it was told didn't fit for a middle grade.

Everything about this should've given whimsical fairy tale forest adventure but it didn't. I was trapped in a world of gun powder, politics and military, which is my worst nightmare when it comes to this type of books. The illustrations are the only serve in this book,  if i ever touch this book again it'll be just to skip thru the drawings girl...

I'm feeling conflicted because I love the idea and I was actually pretty invested in the characters (Prue more than Curtis). But the author's writing style drove me crazy! It really slowed everything down and made it more of a chore than a pleasure for me. But then if this were adapted into an animated film I'd probably be pretty excited to see the story play out without the tedious writing...? Like I said, I'm conflicted! If nothing else, it was worth it to be rewarded by gorgeous illustrations as I slowly made my way through the book.
