i refuse to believe madeline miller is not one of the gods she writes so beautifully about. her prose is as divine as the deities themselves. if i had her skill i would have more words to describe her writing but since i do not, i’m going to have to settle with ‘beautiful’. in every possible way, it is beautiful. that being said, i think i read this book more for the prose than the story itself. perhaps i was not as entranced by the plot as i was by her other work, circe, which is why it took me too long to get into and longer to finish. but it’s safe to say, reading this was not a waste of time. i’m very much grateful to have known the story of patroclus and achilles as retold by madeline miller <3
I have never read a more beautiful or a more tragic romance. We should all hope for love in life as strong as that of Patroclus for Achilles.
I’ve never read a book like this before. The writing is exquisite. This is the best love story I have ever read, the best I have ever experienced. I was falling in love watching them fall in love, and my head has been left all foggy and weird after reading this - but in the best way!
I knew how it would end, and I knew I’d get emotional but I didn’t expect how emotional I would be throughout the entire book. At first the writing style was strange to me, but you soon realise it’s just how Patroclus’ mind works which makes the writing all the more beautiful.
There is now a special place in my heart for this book, a special place in my heart for both Achilles and Patroclus to live forever. I will recommend this book until the day that I die!

Loved this book. So many Greek mythology books feel so stodgy and just full of names, but this was so easy to consume and get lost in.
I was expecting the sob after all the booktok hype around it, and I definitely felt my stomach lurch at points, but not the heart-wrenching despair I was expecting.
