It was an awesome premise-time travel, Roman era, lovers.  The romance was clunky and not well-executed.  The story was a cheap version of what it could have been.  Don’t waste your time.

Couldn’t get past the writing, it’s so choppy.

If it wasn’t for the atrocious dialogue, lack of character development, massive plot holes, clear historical ineptitude, and unlikeable characters, this could have gotten a 3/5. Alas…

The book is poorly written. The dialogue is awful. There is no real character development and the plot is poorly arranged. I started skimming about 100 pages in. I couldn't finish it when it got spicy. The characters are so boring.

One of the very few DNF of my life. I stopped reading at 30%, then skimmed through to 67% (having read two other books in between) and just couldn't go on. The writing is BAD. The dialogues feel stilted. The timeline doesn't make sense. The main characters are unintentional inmature.  And if you read the book without knowing what exactly it is about: good luck in trying to figure out the plot. In summary: this book needs a good editor, minimum.

As a history buff who knows American history, and is familiar with indigenous people of North America and a solid understanding of Greek mythology/gods: knowing the author is playing fast and loose with the actual history — means I cannot believe a thing related to Roman culture/history thus this became a hate read.

  1. Book described Roman’s mom going to Philadelphia and encountering Kiowa and Sioux Peoples. Kiowa people, are originally from the Kansas, southern Great Plains. The Sioux Nation begins at the Mississippi River — no where near Philadelphia. Unless his mom came from the Pacific Coast she would not have encountered the Sioux or Kiowa people.
  2. British people did not ever refer to the colonies in the americas as the “united colonies.” Like dude, did you have the United States and it didn’t match your timeline so you changed it
  3. Romans did not worship the Greek gods. They had their own. The dead were not taken across the River Styx.
  4. Sometime in chapter 28 or so, the author changed the main character’s name  (who had been referred to as Roman). Also the same time, his main enemy finally had a last name. It was weird.

Then, from the perspectives of author choices it is inconceivable that:

  1. Roman’s mom would have means to get to America, live with people who were settled almost a 1,000 miles from where she was supposedly traveling, and THEN had means for her and her bastard born son to travel back to England. For him to return to revolutionary war-era America.

2. It takes a lot of heat, thus fuel, and it would have taken more than a couple minutes to gather enough wood. Also, time. It takes time to burn a body. And, post cremation, there would be bones.  So getting back before dawn is not realistic.

3. Also, talking reality: if Amara was a healer, she would have been freaking busy post-battle. Traveling with an army is NOT like having clinic hours.

4. OK, so she not only remembered the incantation, but absolutely could instantly translate it. Yeah, right.

5. So… there was so much pacing issues. Like, the first third of the book is so slow. And thus, so much happened so quickly and was rushed.  In addition, the belief of their soulmate-ness is hard to believe.

Overall a well written book. The story is very compelling & kept my attention through the entire book.
The only thing that was a little confusing & when she time travels the first time. Could have been a little smoother transition.
But, this is a series that I will finish.

Good twists and turns. Historically accurate?  Nah, but I forgive it. I like the mythos that is unfolding. Hope whenever they end up next, there’s less rape and slavery. But that’s statistically very unlikely.
