as an abject hater of enemies-to-lovers, i was very pleasantly surprised by how much i loved this book! the relationship of conflict between the main characters isn’t what i expected when faced with the trope and struck a balance often missed when it comes to tormenting one another while still having an underlying respect for consent. excellent read, beautifully written.

“I would take your heart between my ribs and guard it like my own. Is there any way I can make you believe it?”

For fans of:
  • Queer romance with a dash of magic
  • Arguing for arguments sake
  • Found family

What a perfect end to this wonderful series. After finishing ‘A Restless Truth’, I was excited to learn that the final book would follow Jack and Alan. Especially after Alan wormed his way into my heart throughout the course of the second book. And I was not disappointed.

I adored this book, it really brought me the same joy that I felt when reading the first book back in 2022. Alan and Jack were so perfectly matched for each other romantically, sexually, and in personality. Their arguments, squabbles, and need to pick fights with each other leading to many a wonderful scene.

I also loved the way that the characters and couples from throughout the series (I was very happy to have Robin and Edwin back on the page) came together at last to resolve the overarching conflict. A messy, queer found family trying to save magic while also trying to navigate their own issues and relationships. It just filled me with joy.

I love this series, and this finale was as strong, if not stronger than its beginning.

As always, I find I need a bit of audiobook assistance to immerse myself in a book with slightly denser worldbuilding and/or plot. The one difficulty I've consistently had across installments in this series (which is firmly a me problem) is how expository or complex the plot can be outside of building the main ship, which is always my #1 priority, BUT. But. Once this one goes, it goes.

Satisfyingly fucky and emotional and so much more about allowing oneself to accept love and community than I anticipated?? Went in thinking this would be about concluding the series' magical quest, of course, with some toxic yaoi in the mix — and then it ended up being surprisingly not toxic at all, in addition to finding me right where I live, deep in feelings about found family.

Loved Jack and Alan, separately and together, as well as good ol' team-up shenanigans. Frankly, more romance series could and should incorporate previous couples as prominent secondary characters in successive books; my fondness for everyone only increased and deepened over this final book.

Also a fan of how the big magical plot resolved! Marske really pulled off the hat trick of writing interesting intrigue, properly steamy sex, and heartfelt character work that felt earned. Had a great time, would def read something by her again.

If I had stopped reading after “A Restless Truth” I probably wouldn’t have felt melancholic at the story having ended, but I for sure do now.  This book tied up all the loose strings so well plus you get to see such a different side to Lord Hawthorn.
The romance is so sweet, I loved all the small details and the honest and tender-hearted love that the characters have for each other.
Well-written and great. This book is honestly just a perfect way to end “The Last Binding” series, though preferably it would never end.

I thought this was so much fun. Dare I say, out of all this series' pairings, I think Jack and Alan might be the dynamic that I enjoyed reading the most - such enjoyable friction.
