I wasn't expecting a biography style summary of Anne's diary entries, I thought this would be a fact-based novel.
It was interesting from a queer and feminist history perspective, but Anne wasn't likeable - so although I learned something I didn't especially enjoy it 😄

Should be illegal for such an interesting topic to be rendered in as heinously boring a fashion as managed here. It would get engaging for a couple paragraphs so I would keep going, and then it would inevitably and wildly fall off again.
The life and times of the 18th century’s most intriguing Yorkshire lesbian. An amazing woman, ahead of her times in so many ways. She wrote extensively about the minutiae of her life and catalogued in detail her romantic life which exposes a side of Victorian life which we don’t often hear of.
The author mixes her own research with excerpts from Anne’s own diaries to complete this picture of the lady of Shibden Hall
It's cool and a privilege to hear about places that I've lived in and walked through throughout this
"This girl, without really having my esteem or affection, somehow or other, unhinges me whenever I see her."
what can i say but iconic
Just when I thought I got Anne's notoriety & unbelievable charm, something else shocking would crop up. I mean, she just casually gets to meet the Russian queen and attend her birthday party???? just hangs out with the princess??
What I most loved was what made her unconventional even beyond the fact that she married another woman: there was no inner turmoil and tragedy regarding her sexuality & society or her sexuality & her religion. She really was just so confident and assured - this was the way she was supposed to be, and she would be happy, damn what anyone else said. She was searching for a wife not only for love but for status, property, and money, just like the standard for other women and men in society... and her family was so supportive?? Also appreciated that the book didn't shy away from the, uh, less iconic things - she was a total classist snob, calculating and a little icy.
Very much a tight companion to the show however, as it's mainly about Ann Walker & Vere - just a couple years out of the decades of diary-writing she did.
Fascinating historical figure. The show is so good, mainly because of Suranne Jones, and this doesn't tell you much that it doesn't, but still interesting to get the non-dramatized facts. She must have been a real trip to know in person.
This glosses over a lot of Anne’s life since it’s meant as a companion to the show, but at that it’s excellent. Anne Lister is such a badass. There she is in the 1800s being who she wants to be, loving who she wants to love, and marrying who she wants to marry. Also shoutout to her exceptionally supportive family as well.
