10/10 Anne is someone I feel I've always known about In some small way being not far away from her home, but it's so detailed and so easy to read I love it so much I could not put it down

I immediately got hooked on the TV Show which you all should watch right now because it's amazing! So I decided to read this companion which basically summarizes Anne Lister's diaries during the period when the show takes place 1832-1834 when she started a relationship with Ann Walker.
It was just so amazing to read about this woman who was larger than life-how she openly lived her lifestyle dressing more masculine, had relationships women at a time when it was certainly less tolerable than now even though we still have a long way to go, would travel across Europe, read a lot, write a lot-to the point of writing millions of words in her lifetime, and running an estate as a woman when it was unheard of back then.
However, it was good that the book also acknowledged that Anne was flawed as well. In some ways she was ahead of her time-being a devout Christian while also stating that her lesbianism was in her nature-therefore it was accepted by God. But in other ways she was a product of her time, having conservative views when it came to politics, believing that landowners should have control over workers' wages.
I think it's important we acknowledge historical figures for their good qualities as well as their flaws though. Anne can be looked as a role model for her confidence in the way she embraced her 'oddities' and pursued relationships with women, but also has someone who was flawed. I'm just glad the show came into my life. It's the lesbian period drama I didn't know I needed!

A great companion to the HBO series that tells the real stories behind what was dramatized. It can be a bit dry at times but it's still fascinating.

Very pleased to learn that Aunt Anne approved of Anne and Ann getting together in real life as well as the show.
