Never has the phrase 'unable to put a book down' been so apt. I was literally glued to this from the moment I picked it up in my local bookshop (immediately began reading it on the train home!) to the moment I closed the final page. A delightful companion read to the BBC tv show, which I have also been voraciously watching of late. It was well written, well researched, and surprisingly emotive at times - and though (without giving away too much) I did feel that it was cut a bit short at the end, this didn't impact on my overall enjoyment of the book.

Definitely another one for the 'favourites' shelf!

I haven’t watched the HBO series, and I didn’t realize that this was a companion piece to the series when I began reading it. I don’t think you need to watch the series to understand Anne Lister’s story. It’s a great one—a lesbian woman making her way in the world during the nineteenth century. Lister’s diaries are apparently encyclopedic, and they are archived for their insights into life at the time. They are also explicit about her sexual encounters, desires, etc. But she, like all of us, seeks a life companion, and her journey to find one is compelling. Her curiosity, too, is inspiring. She was very interested in medical matters of all kinds, for example, frequently attending medical procedures that might make others faint. She’s not presented as a hero, and she has some very disturbing values regarding work and workers. But I found that endearing. We are make our way, warts and all. One caveat, there are many Annes—Anne Lister, Anne Walker, and Lister’s aunt Anne…it was kind of funny after a while—nineteenth century Halifax wasn’t very creative when it came to naming their female children…

What there was of this book, I enjoyed!
I wish there could have been more added. The ending chapter was too abrupt for my liking.

Interesting, a little dense in parts. Honestly I like Anne Lister a little less after reading her diary, but it was an illuminating read.
